Replacing a Smoke Detector for a Customer in Hoboken, NJ

They thought it was just the battery, but it ended up being time for a full replacement. Happens more often than you’d think! Here’s how it all went down, with notes about what each picture showed.
🪜 Step 1: Checking Out the Old Detector
It looked fine and even had the green light, which usually means it’s powered. But constant chirping is your smoke detector’s way of begging for help—usually a battery change, sometimes more.
🔧 Step 2: Twisting Off the Detector
I gently turned the unit counterclockwise to remove it from the bracket. You could see the black and white wires (power supply) still connected. Safety first—I always flip off the breaker before touching anything.
⚡ Step 3: Disconnecting the Wires
After I took down the unit, I removed the mounting plate too. The wires were still in good condition, so it was just a matter of prepping for the new unit.
🆚 Step 4: Comparing Old and New Detectors
The two models looked different, and the new one needed its own mounting plate. That’s normal—smoke detectors aren’t always interchangeable when it comes to the bracket.
🔌 Step 5: Wiring the New Detector
I connected the black and white wires just like the original. There was a red interconnect wire too, but it wasn’t needed for this setup, so I capped it safely.

Once it was mounted and clicked into place, I tested it by pressing the button. It beeped like it should, loud and clear!
